About This Treatment

What Pregnancy Massage Does.

Pregnancy is one of the most physically demanding things a body goes through. And most of the physical difficulty — the lower back that locks up by lunchtime, the hips that ache at night, the legs that won't stop swelling — isn't inevitable. It's a mechanical problem. The body is changing faster than it can adapt, load is redistributing in ways it's never dealt with before, and the soft tissue holding everything together is under continuous strain.

Pregnancy massage at Seabreeze is built to address that. Not to make you feel nice for an hour and then send you back to the same pattern. To actually reduce the tension that's building, help the body move more comfortably through the changes happening to it, and give the nervous system — which is working overtime throughout pregnancy — some genuine recovery time.

Research consistently shows that prenatal massage produces measurable changes in stress hormones. Cortisol and norepinephrine — both of which amplify pain perception and disrupt sleep — drop after regular sessions. Serotonin and dopamine increase. For someone in the third trimester who hasn't slept properly in weeks, that shift is real and meaningful.

The physical effects are equally substantive. Up to 75% of pregnant women experience lower back pain at some point. Hip and pelvic tension compounds as the pelvis widens and the sacroiliac joint becomes more mobile. The sciatic nerve gets increasingly compressed as the uterus puts pressure on the pelvic floor. Each of these has a soft tissue component that responds to targeted bodywork.

Sid holds a Certificate in Pregnancy Massage with specific training in prenatal positioning, safe pressure and trimester-appropriate technique. Treatment is adapted based on where you are in your pregnancy — not a fixed protocol applied regardless.

What to Expect

What to Expect at Each Stage.

The most uncertain trimester — physically and emotionally. Treatment is gentle, focused on upper body tension, fatigue and the postural changes that begin even before the bump is visible. Many clients also find first-trimester sessions help manage the anxiety that sits underneath the early weeks. There is no clinical evidence that massage causes miscarriage. The historical caution around first-trimester massage was precautionary, not evidence-based. Treatment is safe from the start of pregnancy when the pregnancy is progressing normally.

Usually the most comfortable trimester for bodywork. By this stage the lower back is carrying significantly more load as the pelvis tilts forward. The hip flexors and glutes tighten in response. The thoracic spine compensates for the shift in centre of gravity. Treatment uses side-lying positioning with bolster support and focuses on the lower back and hip complex, upper back tension, and round ligament discomfort. Most clients in this stage notice the biggest movement improvements between sessions.

Treatment is adapted carefully for comfort and safety. The priority shifts to managing load — lower back and sacrum, hips and piriformis, the legs for swelling and circulation, and the upper back for those carrying tension from disrupted sleep. Many clients in late pregnancy report that sessions produce the most noticeable sleep improvement — the parasympathetic shift from bodywork has a real effect that extends well beyond the session itself.

Questions Before You Book?

Common questions about how pregnancy treatment works and what to expect.

Check if this is right for you

Yes — when provided by a therapist with specific pregnancy massage training. Sid holds a Certificate in Pregnancy Massage with training in safe positioning, pressure and trimester-appropriate technique. If you have a high-risk pregnancy or specific medical concerns, check with your midwife or OB first.

Any time during pregnancy that you're comfortable. Many clients start in the first trimester; others wait until the second. Both are fine.

No. From the second trimester, treatment uses a side-lying position supported by bolsters — the safest and most comfortable position for both you and the baby.

Many clients come monthly through the second trimester and more frequently in the third. A plan is discussed after the first session.

Yes — they refer to the same thing. Both describe bodywork adapted for pregnant women, with positioning and pressure modified for safety and comfort at each stage.

Postnatal bodywork is available from around 4–6 weeks post-birth. This can be discussed at your final prenatal session or booked directly.

Very common in late pregnancy as the uterus puts pressure on the pelvic floor muscles, which can compress the sciatic nerve. Bodywork addressing the piriformis and surrounding hip musculature can meaningfully reduce this.
